Why a second language learner should learn phonics?

Phonics are extremely useful in learning English as a native speaker or non- native learner because phonics proficiency helps for reading and spelling later in life.

According to ESL teachers’ research, adult non-native speaker students who did not have phonics knowledge sometimes have difficulties in spelling some words even if they know these words because, at the beginning of their learning journey, they did not learn how the words are formed.

They did learn the words with the repetition and remembering method. Numerous words are stored in their brain and sometimes they experience blackouts when recalling words they used to know. They try to sound out the words but they don’t have the knowledge of which written letters represent which sound.

When they write or spell unfamiliar words, they get confused and struggle with figuring out the correct spelling. Even diligent students who take their learning English seriously can mispronounce or misspell some words. Sometimes they find it difficult to sound out some words correctly.

Learning English with the appropriate system makes student life better, particularly for non-native English speakers. Non-native English language students don’t have many opportunities to speak English in their daily life. They can only learn and hear English at school. If their learning system is good, they can become as good speakers or writers as native English speakers.

People often say that learning takes times: the longer the learning time, the better the education. This may not be entirely true.

Learning largely depends on which system is used and how much you practice. While most students take up to 10 years to get competent at reading and writing, some students only need one or two years of study and sometimes, they even get better results than those who studied for 10 years. How does this happen? Obviously those students who needed just one year have benefited from a better learning system than those students who took 10 years to reach similar levels of language mastery.

A systematic phonics system is undeniably helpful for non-native English speaking children or adults to gain solid literacy skills, pronunciation skills and self-confidence. Also, learning English or any other second language greatly improves problem solving skills, general knowledge, creative thinking skills and communication skills. In short, it helps to develop a fully functional brain and emotional intelligence.

Usually, in a non-English speaking country, a person who can speak English has better job opportunities than a person who does not speak English, even if they may have similar work experience.
